About this deal

So, to fill the time in trying to find Moldovan footballers and force them to play tennis against him, Tony sees some of the country. Tony Hawks, un actor de comedie din Anglia şi un bărbat excentric ce adoră provocările neobişnuite, e legat de Moldova printr-un pariu. Peter Moore is another example of similar literature, though perhaps one of the best ones is Daniel Kalder's Lost Cosmonaut: Observations of an Anti-Tourist. It should be mentioned that a short time before his Moldovan adventure he won a bet that included his traveling around Ireland - with a fridge! It sees him smuggle his way on to the Moldovan National Team coach in Coleraine and witness (almost) divine intervention in the Holy Land.

Half way in, I was kinda barracking for him to succeed however as got a bit closer to meeting the players I was put off by a couple of things. So adamant that he was willing to agree to stripping naked and singing the Moldovan national anthem if he wasn't able to beat all 11 players.

The harshness of life in Moldova is quite well reflected through the writing, which makes for a less fulfilling read, but overall a more moving experience. It provides an interesting view of Eastern Europe's post-Communist life, while keeping you in suspense: Will he?

Film by Tony Hawks, based on the true story of a bet involving playing and beating the entire Moldovan national football team at tennis. All in all, “…Tennis” is a better written book than “…Fridge” as it runs a gamut of emotions, rather than being all too easy. A number of his potential opponents either weren’t available or no longer played their club football in Moldova. Hawks wrote one book previously, Round Ireland with a Fridge, where apparently he walked around Ireland while carrying a fridge, also on a bet. Despite the rarity of visitors, he receives an apathetic welcome as his mission provokes little more than weak smiles.Comedian Tony Hawks is set the challenge of beating at tennis all 11 of the Moldovan international footballers who lost 4-0 to England at Wembley. Then the end of the book is a bit of a blur, as the author somehow ends up going to Coleraine and then to Nazareth. It’s a fun and an entertaining little read, as Hawks often is, although I don’t think it’s one that I’ll find myself thinking about too deeply in the months and years to come. In this book, he follows on from the adventure he wrote about in Round Ireland with a Fridge with a trip to Moldova in which he attempted to beat the entire Moldovan national football team at tennis.

He’s also pretty fond of telling Tony he’s not very good at tennis, which upsets Tony because Tony thinks he’s actually rather good at the game. Following a bet with a friend after watching the Moldovan national soccer team play England, Hawks sets out to beat all players at tennis, mostly in Moldova, but also being forced to visit Israel and Northern Ireland. He is frequently confused with Tony Hawk, largely because the latter's video game franchise uses the possessive apostrophe ("Tony Hawk's"). And so it is, a pointless argument with a friend concludes in a bet - that Tony can't beat all eleven members of the Moldovan soccer team at tennis. An eccentric wager finds Tony Hawks, a man who loves an unusual challenge, bound for the little-known Eastern European state of Moldova. As someone who grew up with Dave Gorman’s Important Astrology Experiment, I’ve always found it interesting to read Hawks because I guess he must have been an influence on some of the people who influenced me. The reason why his travelouge is not great as Bissel's, is exactly because he does not even try to get a clue about the subject before he started writing. Unlike his time in Moldova and in “Round Ireland With a Fridge”, a lot of the people he meets aren’t part of his bet and aren’t helping him along. Overall, I'd recommend the book to someone looking for an easy read dealing with the former Soviet Union. Tony is still traveling regularly to Moldova and is doing additional fundraising for the good cause.
