I chose to have her go to her special place while I made dinner, and in my case it’s a chair placed at the bar in the dining room. She still gets to see everything from her spot. And yes, the command I we use is simply “go to your chair.” When you get in the habit of waving a piece of treat in your dogs, face you may get them to listen to you, but only when you show them you have “something for them” You may also benefit from switching from a front clip harness to a head halter. Sometimes the best way for you to help your dogs gain skill at respondingin a distracting situation is simply to ask the dog for an easier response.The best way to reduce the dog’s excitement level is usually to move him further away from the distraction. This is powerful stuff—three reinforcers for one behavior! These reinforcers also mitigate or negate what for some dogs could be an aversive—being expected to disengage from an enjoyable, inherently reinforcing activity like play, chasing prey, or sniffing the ground. When trainers are clear and consistent with criteria and make wise decisions about lowering or increasing criteria, reliable cue response is only a matter of time. Extensive reinforcement history—practice makes perfect! Let me clarify that dogs have a “hierarchy of rewards,” meaning that dogs prefer their “favorite” treat or toy. The dog is easily completing each stage of the exercise and the owner is repeating the same stage too often. Again, the dog can switch off and appear to lose concentration. While she’s not perfect, and I still make my fair share mistakes, we’re a much better pair these days. 99% of our walks are completely uneventful, even when we have to walk by a trio of horses or a pair of loose dogs. He is simply too aroused to respond to your cues at this point. When training your dog around distractions, what does good look like? When your dog will perform a cue 90% of the time. This means, you say “sit” and your dog immediately (within 2 seconds) puts his behind on the ground 9 out of 10 times. Move to the next step. 🙂

When I first got Laika I was pretty lax with a lot of behaviors. She’d push my hands around with her nose or paws when I had treats in my hand, and she had a really bad habit of jumping up on everyone she met. I’d try redirecting her with toys, vocal commands, and pretty much everything under the sun. None of it was working — she was already so excited by the time I’d try to intervene. You need to create situations where you control how many other dogs there are, and what they do next, and where you control what kind of access to those dogs your dog has.

Should You Use a Clicker?

Wait the dog out and reward something very simple. It could a glance or a look in your direction to begin with. It could progress to a hand touch, and then a sit or a few steps at heel. Remember that behavior is in a constant state of flux. I have days when I feel like my timing is spot-on and other days when I get discouraged because I feel like my timing is slow or off. Dogs have days when they perform well in a given environment, and other days when they are more easily distracted. Dogs need to practice being successful rather than being set up to practice making mistakes. If you want your dog to focus better, one of the best dog training focus exercises is using your dog’s favorite treats to your advantage!
