To celebrate the eBook release of his new breathtaking police procedural Dead Man’s Grave, Neil Lancaster shares the story behind the novel and how one conversation inspired it. She is a young, intelligent woman who isn’t afraid to be herself and she has to put up with lots of stick from a very backwards male dominated workplace but seems to have learned how shine without compromising her integrity and without her this book would be a lot less than it is. As a covert policing specialist, he used all manner of techniques to investigate and disrupt major crime and criminals. He has been killed with a 200 year old cutlass, as part of a blood feud that goes back to the 19th century, from its beginnings in 1830, Tam Jnr, as the eldest of Hardie's 3 sons, is the new head of their criminal empire, with his brothers, Frankie and Davie as the enforcers. They both feel real and authentic characters with Max going in boldly where others may fear to tread and I like the banter between them.Since retiring from the Metropolitan Police, Neil has relocated to the Scottish Highlands with his wife and son.

Using mobile phone data to track the old man, Max and Janie follow Hardie Snr’s trail to the graveyard, find his car parked there and soon discover Hardie’s corpse, hidden in the same grave he opened. He begins a missing person enquiry that ends up as a murder investigation and the consequences from this investigation reach far and wide. They were fairly casual in their pursuit because the buffoon was indicating 3 seconds in advance before changing lanes or making turns thereby making him easy to follow. His accent was deep, resonant and 100% West Coast Scottish, despite having lived in Australia and New Zealand for decades.

The final section of the book was fast moving and realistic with plenty of dark humour and several twists that weren’t telegraphed well in advance, something that always makes a nice change. When the head of one of Scotland’s most notorious crime families is found brutally murdered, the police are bound to be in for a rough ride, as DS Max Craigie and DC Janie Calder soon discover. While this comment will date think "Line of Duty" but with a much better ending rather than anything else! It has four nationally rare plants, Spanish catchfly, Boehmer's cat's-tail, Breckland Wild Thyme and spring speedwell.

Facts about police procedure, details of surveillance or how mobiles are tracked, often have my eyes glazing over but the balance here was spot on. One does need to listen hard sometimes because the majority of the time the narrator uses numersous Scottish Dialects, and quite right; however, it din’t diminish my thorough enjoyment of this book. I am thoroughly enjoying getting to read beyond YA fiction but also think a lot of these crime novels would be enjoyed by senior high school students too, but they need to read the content warnings.
